The process of conception by a parent is supposed to be natural. Yet, once several months turn into years and each pregnancy test yields a negative outcome, one gets engrossed in disappointments, doubts and lots of questions. One that very commonly comes to mind is “Which method of fertility treatment is best for us – IUI, IVF or ICSI?”
Each parent takes their own road to having children and there is no guarantee that the treatment which was successful in other people’s case will bring the desired result in your case as well. The fertility treatment comparison will help you better understand the differences between IUI, IVF and ICSI treatments.
What Is the Difference between IUI, IVF, and ICSI
Though all these techniques help people conceive, there is a big difference between them.
IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) is the simplest assisted reproduction technique. This technique involves insertion of selected healthy sperm cells into the female’s uterus before ovulation. Thus, the fertilization takes place inside the body of the woman just like natural conception.
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a more complex technique. In essence, it involves collecting the eggs from a woman’s ovaries and putting them in a laboratory that mimics uterus conditions together with sperm cells. After the fertilization occurs and healthy embryos develop, one of them is put back into the uterus.
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is a special technique which is a variation of IVF. Unlike in vitro fertilization when fertilization occurs naturally, in ICSI the sperm cell is introduced into the mature egg by the embryologist using special devices. Further implantation into the uterus occurs like in IVF.
IUI Process
IUI treatment is commonly suggested to parents with minor reproductive issues or unknown causes of infertility.
It starts with the process of monitoring the menstrual cycle of the woman. At times, certain medicines are administered to the female in order to allow one or two eggs to mature. The follicles’ development is monitored through ultrasound examination, and when the egg is mature, an injection is given to release it.
On the day of the procedure, the man is asked to give semen sample. In the laboratory, healthy, motile sperm are isolated from the rest of the semen. These healthy sperm are injected in the uterus via a catheter. Two weeks after the procedure, a pregnancy test is conducted to find out the results.
IVF Process
The process of IVF is quite well-structured and consists of several important steps. First of all, hormones are used to induce the ovaries to create several mature eggs rather than one. During this time, the patient undergoes several blood tests and ultrasounds to ensure everything is working properly.
After the eggs have become mature enough, egg retrieval is conducted under anesthesia. It means that eggs are extracted under ultrasound guidance from the ovaries via a thin needle.
On the same day, the male partner produces a sperm sample which then is fertilized together with the eggs in the laboratory. 3-5 days after fertilization, embryos develop and their growth is carefully monitored by an embryologist who chooses the best embryo for further implantation into the uterus. The rest of the quality embryos may be frozen. About ten to fourteen days, after that the result of the pregnancy is checked by blood pregnancy test.
ICSI Process
The beginning of the ICSI process looks very much like the IVF process. The female gets hormone injections, her eggs are monitored and eggs are retrieved the same way.
The only thing that differs between the two processes is what takes place in the laboratory. In the case of IVF procedure, a lot of sperm cells are placed close to the egg and allowed to fertilize naturally while in the case of ICSI one healthy sperm cell is injected into the egg using a needle. This process makes sure fertilization happens in case sperm cells cannot enter the egg. Next step is embryo development in the lab followed by the embryo implantation into the uterus.
Which Procedure Should Be Done Between IUI, IVF, And ICSI?
Selection among the procedures of IUI vs IVF vs ICSI is determined by the reason of infertility. IUI is typically recommended to parents suffering from male infertility, female cervix disorders, ovulatory problems, or unexplained infertility when the fallopian tubes are normal. IVF procedure is normally recommended when the fallopian tubes are obstructed or both are blocked, endometriosis exists, fertility drugs are not effective, or there are decreased ovarian reserves.
As for choosing between IVF and ICSI procedures, ICSI treatment is recommended if the male patient suffers from very low sperm count, low motility, abnormal morphology, surgically obtained sperm, and poor fertilization during previous IVF treatment cycles. All treatment decisions are made after careful diagnosis of the cause of infertility.
Fertility Treatments Success Rate, Complexity, and Recovery Period
While conducting a fertility treatments comparison, one should keep in mind that success greatly depends on many aspects such as age, eggs’ and sperm quality, reproductive health status, etc.
In Vitro Fertilization is the most advanced method of conception and the most complex one, which takes several procedures and a long time period to complete, but the success rate is much higher than in case with IUI and ICSI.
ICSI adds another layer of support for couples facing severe male infertility problems. The success rate becomes much higher due to this procedure. However, since ICSI is done during an IVF procedure, the recovery process is quite the same as during IVF procedure.
How Do You Choose the Right Fertility Treatment?
Every treatment works differently on every couple. For some couples, one cycle of IUI is enough for conception, whereas, for other couples, the only solution to conceive is through IVF or ICSI. The key here is to go for a complete fertility test without trying to compare yourself to somebody else’s case. Your fertility specialist at Prime IVF Centre analyzes your and your partner’s reports and provides the best possible treatment option. The right treatment will not only increase your chances of conceiving but will also minimize the stress involved emotionally.
Every journey to fertility is unique and brings hope to the parent. No matter what option your doctor recommends, whether it is IUI, IVF, or ICSI, keep in mind that all these treatments are just different paths that lead to one destination that is your baby in your arms.
